Former US President Donald Trump faced a sudden scare during a rally in Pennsylvania when gunshots rang out, prompting swift action from security agents. Video footage captured the moment he reacted, wincing and touching his right ear as the shots rang out. Within moments, a team of vigilant US Secret Service agents surrounded him and swiftly escorted him off stage to safety, where he acknowledged supporters with a raised fist before being driven away. Trump later shared on his Truth Social network that a bullet had grazed the “upper part” of his right ear. Initial reports from his spokesperson indicated he was under medical care at a nearby medical facility.

“I immediately sensed something was amiss when I heard a whizzing sound, followed by gunfire, and felt the bullet tearing through my skin,” Trump recounted. “There was considerable bleeding, confirming my fears.”Blood was visibly evident on Trump’s ear and face as security personnel swiftly whisked him away.

The assailant, identified by US Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi, was fatally shot at the location. Guglielmi further disclosed that one bystander lost their life in the incident, with two others critically wounded. All three victims were identified as male in subsequent official reports.

Law enforcement sources informed CBS News, BBC’s US partner, that the male attacker had used a rifle and fired from an elevated structure several hundred meters away from the venue. FBI agents leading the investigation in Butler mentioned they had preliminarily identified the deceased gunman but were yet to establish a motive. Special Agent Kevin Rojek confirmed the incident was being treated as an assassination attempt. He added that the suspect had no identification on them, and authorities were utilizing DNA testing for positive identification.

The shooting occurred just as Trump began addressing supporters in Butler, Pennsylvania, a crucial battleground state in the upcoming election. Shots rang out while Trump was discussing President Joe Biden and his administration. Supporters standing behind Trump and holding signs instinctively ducked upon hearing the gunfire.

Witnesses suggested to the BBC that the shots may have originated from a single-story building to the right of the stage where Trump was speaking. Greg, a witness, informed law enforcement about a suspicious individual he observed “bear crawling” on the roof of that building, armed with a rifle, shortly after Trump started his speech.

Tim, another attendee, described hearing a “barrage” of gunfire. He noted a sudden spray and movement on the right side of the stage, which appeared to be caused by the speaker system falling due to damage to its hydraulic lines.

Warren and Debbie, present at the rally, recounted hearing at least four shots and witnessing Secret Service agents urgently instructing everyone to get down. Despite the chaos, they remarked on the calmness of the crowd, though they were shocked and disbelieving that such an event could unfold.
